Pain in that area is generally indicative of a disk problem - if the pain radiates forward into the anterior area (front of the body), the problem could be severe, especially if it's constant and has lasted for more than week.

You can determine the disk / vertebrae which is causing the pain, or whether it's a disk at all, by the pain type and whether it follows a certain path. A disk herniation typically presses on an adjoining nerve, causing extreme pain, which feels like a sharp needle. If it's bad enough, you can feel the pain down a path you can trace with your finger - this path is the nerve pathway, and all nerves can be traced from their origin to the end of the path. It's this knowledge that allows us to determine the disk At Fault. For example, nerve pain down the back of the legs is the sciatic nerve being pressured by disks at the L4/5 or L5/S1 disks. Nerve pain that begins in the middle of the back, goes down the spine, across the waist and hip, across the thigh and ending at the inside of the knee is the L3/L4 disk pressing on a nerve.

Spinal stenosis and Arthritis can also cause pain. The type of pain (sharp, burning, radiating, throbbing, dull, etc.) also can indicate where the pain is coming from. Sharp pain is usually nerve related, while dull, throbbing pain is typical of muscle injury. Sharp pain can also be caused by muscle spasms from a disk herniation. Burning pain can be a torn or stretched muscle or ligament.

While the liver and kidneys can cause pain in the back, that kind of pain is usually accompanied by other symptoms - swelling, urinary problems, and many others. The key is to determine what kind of pain you're having, it's strength level, whether it's traceable down a path, and then from there try to determine the origin. All symptoms you may have must be taken into account, not just the pain.

Learn to keep a Pain Diary also to track your pain. Make note of the time of day, the date, what you ate (many pains can be caused by certain foods), the type of weather (barometer changes cause pain also), and medicines you're taking or took (pain can be caused by drug side effects), as much data as you can. Over time you may see a pattern that you can trace to the origin. At the very least, you'll have data in hand should you require a doctor at some point. Don't underestimate the value of a Pain Diary - it can really help, especially if at some point you need pain medication. Not all doctors are easily willing to give pain meds, but real pain isn't easily faked, and if you've got documentation to show you've been tracking it, it's considered valid evidence.
