At the end of World War II, few questioned Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Most Americans accepted the obvious reasoning: the atomic bombings brought the war to a more timely end. They did not have a problem with over one hundred thousand of the enemy being killed. After all, the Japanese attacked America, and not the other way around. In later years, however, many have begun to question the conventional wisdom of "Truman was saving lives," putting forth theories of their own. However, when one examines the issue with great attention to the results of the atomic bombings and compares these results with possible alternatives to using said bombs, the line between truth and fiction begins to clear. Truman's decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan was for the purpose of saving lives and ending the war quickly in order to prevent a disastrous land invasion.

If the Japanese have surrendered, or find a way out of this mess, possibly. But since they didn't, and the leader of Japan ordered all citizens to prepare to fight for Japan, made it impossible to avoid being bombed. If the US didn't order to bomb the countries, and CITIZENS then that wouldn't have even existed.
In my opinion, yes, it could have. However, it would have cost sooo many more American lives to have invaded mainland Japan in the traditional method. By dropping the bombs, we ended a war the fastest way possible. besides, we were attacked first.
Yes, in fact the Americans had already set up a plan to take over the Japanese Home Island, it was called Operation Downfall, it was cancelled due to horrendous casualties at Okinawa which had 117,000 Japaneses men defending the Island, and no air support, on the home island, they had assembled a force of 1,000,000 men and 3,500 aircraft's, Truman, as an war veteran decided no more American life would be on the line after the bloodshed at Okinawa and had recently learned of the ''New powerful bomb'' and thus ordered the Bombs dropped
It could have avoided but most people think Truman made the right decision.

I do not believe the WW2 atomic bombings of japan could have been avoided, there were too many military, political, technological, and international pressures piled up effectively insisting on it for anyone to prevent it.

BTW, if you were actually referring to the explosions at the Japanese reactors after the earthquake, possibly. But we won't know until an accident analysis has been completed. But none of them were nuclear, only steam and/or hydrogen/oxygen.

______

That's not to say the damaged reactors AREN'T leaking; radiation spikes have been detected as far away as the US West Coast (though the spikes are minimal and not yet dangerous). Radiation is more than 100 times the earth's normal backround radiation in and around that Fukushima-Daiichi plant.

No. Japan still had a strong army on the mainland so dropping the atomic bombs was probably the most sensible thing to do. If they hadn't, they would have had to have pulled off an amphibious landing which would have been very costly in men and supplies for both sides. The war would have probably dragged on for another year or two and it just wasn't worth it.

It could have been avoided, but it was calculated that the loss of life (particularly on the US side), and the accompanying destruction, accompanyinga full-scale invasion was equal if not more. Remember the Japanese culture of fighting until the last man is dead.
