Yes they can. In general, however, the "groan" is not as bad as the "hammer." When water is suddenly forced through pipes containing a sharp bend, the water can hit the side of the pipe as if it's a wall. The force of the water can burst the pipes.

Most modern Plumbing fixtures account for this "hammering." But there are lots of old pipes out there too!

What causes household plumbing to 'groan' when the toilet is flushed?

If this noise occurs after shutting off a fixture (e.g., shower or sink), I'd pop the lid on the toilet tank and check there. Sometimes, this type of noise occurs when water pressure is reduced somewhere else, causing the fill valve to open slightly and howl like a foghorn. So, after shutting off the water and hearing the noise, pull up on the toilet tank float to see if it stops. If it does, replacing the fill valve will fix it.if still problem persist call for plumbing repair service.

What is a groan inducing pun?

A groan-inducing pun would be a play on words that causes one to respond with a groan. The reasons for groaning in response to a pun may vary, but in general it would be a way of acknowledging a particularly bad, lame, or cheesy pun. A groan could also be a way of appreciating a clever pun without breaking a perceived social barrier for laughing at puns. Lastly, a groan could be caused by a mixed emotional response of irritation and entertainment or an expression of jealousy that the groaner did not think of the pun first. In most cases, however, a groan-inducing pun would be an especially bad one.
