No. They may have been something that drove change but not natural selection. The invention of scientific thought has produced more change. Dr. Snow tracked down the cause of cholera outbreaks in London and forced sewer systems to be put into cities.
Even though small pox (a virus) may have killed as many as 300-500 million people, it no long exists except as "saved" samples and could be used as a bioterrorist weapon.
These are examples of scientific advances.
