put your foot on the brake.... if that doesn't work you have to fix the wiring for the brake/transmission interlock
1996-1999 Taurus Sable: Fuse #5 is for the "Brake shift interlock". I *think* that's the one. The brake switch down on the brake pedal is also a factor in getting stuck in park. See "Related Questions" below for more about that too.
Check to see if stop lights work---same circuit as shift interlock
Check to see if the brake lights are working - brake lights and shift interlock are the same circuit. If brake lights are not working check the fuse or thealignment and operation of the stop light switch or try the following as a temporarty measure: Turn key to 1st position (Unlock) without starting vehicle Shift to Neutral to start vehicle Then shift to Drive

First check to see if you have brake lights, if no brake lights you have a bad shift interlock switch,it is a small black box located behind your brake pedal. It's about $45.00 from the dealership. I keep a spare in my van.
The shift interlock solenoid switch has gone out on it. There should be a little hole in the console you can stick a small screwdriver into to allow you to shift out of park and start the car. Another reason it might not shft out of park is that your brake lights don't work. If not check the fuse and switch at the pedal.
check your brake light fuse
My 1994 Sidekick JX 4WD is stuck in Park there is no clicking sound when pushing the brake pedal is it adjustable or do I need to replace a part if so what part?
Check to see if the stop lights are working. Shift interlock and brake lights are the same circuit. If they do not work: Check the fuse and the stop light switch - usually located at the upper end of the brake pedal. Try turning the key to 1st (unlock) position Shift to neutral to start and then shift to "Drive"
Check fuse for stop lights same circuit for shift interlock or turn key to 1st position (unlock) and move shift lever to neutral to start
It could be that the shift interlock is not releasing. There is an override switch underneath the steering column or the shifter console.
I looked at my 1995 Ford Explorer owners manual and it shows : If you cannot shift from Park with the brake pedal depressed : a . Apply the parking brake b . Remove the key c . Insert the key and rotate one position clockwise ( ignition OFF ) d . Depress the brake pedal and shift to Neutral e . start the vehicle If you need to shift out of Park by using… Read More
Set the parking brake before you put the shift in park when parking.Take shift out of park before releasing the parking brake when driving.
Check the brake switch on the brake pedal, if the switch is bad or a fuse is blown, the shifter will not release.
If you cannot shift with your foot on the brake, your vehicle's neutral shift interlock may have failed. This is a safety device that prevents the vehicle from being put in gear unless the driver's foot is on the brake. This system is an electronic circuit, and a failure anywhere in the system can prevent you from shifting into gear from either Park or Neutral. Newer Escapes have an override built in. You will need… Read More
Possibly the brake light switch is bad. I had a recall on a Ford Taurus that spoke of this problem. The brake light switch releases a solenoid that holds the shifter in park.
Stuck in Park? Check to see if the brake lights are working - same circuit as shift interlock Check to see if stop light fuse blown Try turning key to 1st position (unlock) shift to neutral to start and then shift to Drive also check to make sure the selenoid on the shift mechanism is working on mine it froze up and stopped working properly if that happens it will normally work when the interior… Read More
I have a similar issue with my 2007 Focus SE hatchback. I believe it is related to the brake-shift interlock. I have played around with the e-brake and letting the car roll back in park until the transmission's park pawl is engaged, etc. If the shifter button will release without your foot on the brake, the key will not release from the column either. Of course, I'm assuming this is an automatic...
First a question. Were you stepping on the brake when you tried to shift it out of park?
Fix your brake lights and this problem will go away. Didn't know the brake lights were out did you? May be a fuse or the switch.
If pressing the brake pedal does not allow a 2002 VW Beetle to shift there a problem with the brake switch. The switch acts as a safety when shifting a vehicle and if it malfunctions the transmission will not be able to shift out of park.
The transmission shifter has a safety interlock. You must depress the brake to release the interlock in-order to shift into a drive or reverse gear. This system is powered by electricity. If you move a fuse from on spot to another but don't remove a fuse then one of them must be blown. Check the fuses for faults. The brake pedal / brake light circuit must be functioning in order to put the car in… Read More
Stuck in Park? Check to see if the stop lights are working - shift interlock should be the same circuit Check stop light fuse Try turning the key to 1st position (Unlock) Shift to neutral to start vehicle and then shift to Drive
Check the shifter interlock system. A simple problem like a bad brake light switch can make the interlock not release. Possible fuse or wiring problem also. this is only a guess because of lack of information (Year, make, model, etc) given. Also check the owners manual for bypass instructions if the car does have a interlock system. An interlock system needs the brake pedal depressed to move the shifter.
If you have to apply the brake before you shift out of park, check the fuses. If it doesn't have the interlock, rock the vehicle back and forth, if you are physically capable; if not, get a friend or neighbor to help. While rocking the vehicle, GENTLY try to move the gear shifter. It sounds as if the parking pawl has to much tension on it. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL DOING THIS IF THE VEHICLE IS… Read More
No you can not over ride the shift interlock. You can manually over ride it, but you will have to do it again every time the vehicle gets stuck in park. There is a recall on that specific part. I suggest going to your local dealership and having them fix it once and for all.
Stuck in Park? Check to see if the stop lights are working - shift interlock is the same circuit - check the stop light fuse Try to turnthe key to 1st (unlock) position, shift to neutral start vehicle and the shift to Drive
Check fuses, and check the shifter lock switch on the brake pedal.
sometime when you step on the brake to remove it out of park the relese gets stuck try stepping on brake and shaking gear shift handle We had a similar problem, and the answer that it is the Stop Light Switch on the brake pedal itself is Correct! Did cost $6 to fix, fixed the problem immediately and only 2 bolts to replace. Very easy. Very inexpensive!
Check the brake light fuse, the interlock works off 2 circuits, one being the brake lights. There is also a fuse for the actuator itself.
Check to see if stop lights are working - shift interlock and stop lights are the same circuit. Check the fuses Check the operation of the stop light switch Try turning key to 1st (unlock) position shift to neutral to start vehicle and then shift to drive
Step on the brake, press the lock on the 'Shift Stick' and push it to 'Park'.
Could be a number of things. Make sure that you are setting the parking brake when you park, get into the habit of doing this all the time. Takes quite a bit of load off the parking pawl - especially when parked on an incline or hill. Make sure you step on the brake pedal before you shift out of park. Make sure the shift button is completely depressed before you step on the brakes… Read More
Be sure to apply the brake before trying to shift out of park. If you apply the brake and the car still won't shift out of park, do not try to force it. The problem could be a failure of the mechanism that releases the shifter.
Make sure your brake lites work.If they dont replace brake lite switch
Brake Shift Interlock Fuse 1995-1998 #7 - Brake shift interlock #21 - Shift-lock actuator(?) 1999-2003 - #11 NEUTRAL SAFTEY SWITCH OR BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH(located behind the brake pedal) tells shifter that you have the brake on to come out of park. it is the stop light switch located on the break pedal arm you can get it at the parts store for around 15-30 dollars and you should need minimal tools if any to replace… Read More
I don't know how to fix it perse, but we ran into the problem in my roommate's 98 SL2 where it was sticking and locking the key in the ignition. The problem was the actual mechanism where the shift lock connects to the gear shift was stuck or malaligned or something, if you pull out the cupholder and wiggle on it it seems to unstick it. I'm thinking a good cleaning should hopefully fix it… Read More
The switch on the brake pedal may not be working, if you unplug the wiring from it it should shift if this is the problem.
I don't know the Acura as they are not in the UK But it may well have safety device fitted that will not allow you to shift from park unless your foot is on the brake pedal. If this is the case, check that the brake lights are working, if they are not it may indicate a faulty brake light switch.
You might have a bad brake light switch. If you don't have brake lights the switch is bad. When your brake light switch isn't working it wont send a signal to the shift solenoid.
Check to see if stop lights are working. Shift interlock and stop lights are on (perhaps blown fuse) the same circuit. If stop lights are not working, try turning the key to the 1st position (unlock) and try to shift to neutral to start car and then you can move shift lever.
