Separation of Power vests the powers of the Government into multiple entities that are more or less autonomous of one another.

In the United States, the Constitution separates the power of the Federal Government into three branches. The Legislature, the Executive, and the Judiciary.

The system of checks and balances is how the branches make sure that one branch does not gain too much power over the other. Each branch has "checks" over the other two, concurrently the other two "check" it.
