DeLand High School was desegrated in the fall of 1965, as I recall. It is possible it could have been 1966. There was only one black that year. His name was Stanley Jenkins (I beleive) and he was an outstanding football player.

He did not attend any college. He went to basic school and got only mediocre ratings. Then he tried to get into art college in Vienna, but failed, not once, but twice, to meet the requirements for getting in. He then joined the German army, and, after the WWI he became a politician.

"Desegregated" refers to doing away with, or ending, segregation in a school, business, apartment, etc. Here's how it's used: When Bill Clinton attended high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, many schools were still segregated, with black students being forbidden from attending certain all-white schools. But in 1954, the Supreme courts ordered an end to segregation, and gradually, all of the schools in Little Rock were desegregated.
The answer requires further research. The first racially integrated school in the United States may have been in Oberlin, Ohio, or it might have been the school on the island of Nantucket off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts which was founded in 1846.
I am a member of the Class of 1968. We had a black guy in the DeLand High School Band in 1967 (Elvin (sic) Johnson) and we also had a black guy that was a member of the Class of 1967, a member of the football team and a Senior Superlative as Male Athlete of 1967, so I think that would be when DeLand High School desegregated. I remember we played St. Augustine in football that year and Elvin's parents were convinced not to send Elvin with the Band because of the problems in St. Augustine at that time. The Band members had plumes on their hats and we had to hide them on our way back to the buses after the game (we won by the way) because the plumes were being stolen off our hats. When we got in the buses, they were rocked by the St. Augustine "fans". It was a very tense time. Needless to say, DeLand has never played St. Augustine since. I also know that the black guy that played football would be pummeled after being tackled during many of the games.
He is supposed to go to my high school, but Not exactly sure where he is now, but he went to my high school and we became friends in 9th grade, I have no idea if he dropped out or is going to a different school. I know he's been coping with drug addiction and my buddy Nick rented a house to Austin and his girlfriend Tiana so they could raise their baby there.
