Diverse. Washington state possesses a temperate rainforest near the Olympic Mountains, and a desert in Eastern Washington. It is the birthplace of Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon.com, Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana (the band). It was the launch point for the Yukon Gold Rush. It is the only state of the 48 contiguous U.S. states to have had a volcanic eruption in the 21st century (Mount Saint Helens erupted again in 2004). It includes two major mountain ranges: the Olympic Mountains (which are folded, non-volcanic mountains along the Pacific Coast) and the Cascade mountains (which are volcanic and include Mount Rainier and Mount Saint Helens). It possess the largest North American river that dumps into the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia River (which also partially serves as its border with Oregon, the next southernmost state) and that river produces more hydroelectric power than any other river in North America. Mount Baker, in the southern part of the state, set a world record in 1999 for snowiest season with 95 feet of snow.
