Maize (corn) seeds normally will germinate (sprout) at a soil temperature of 50°F (10°C) or higher. While some newer hybrids will sprout at lower temperatures, they are at higher risk of fungal infection. Once emerged, the maize crop needs to have air temperatures no lower than freezing (32°F or 0°C) until the crop has had time to mature. Air or soil temperatures during the season higher than 95°F (35°C) will slow the crop's growth or development and may decrease the final yield.
