The Host-a large man with bright eyes, a good speaker, wise and full of tact, and a sanguine, good-humored man-suggests that the pilgrims travel together and tell stories to pass the time. He offers to go along to serve as guide, judge the stories, and keep the company "merry." The reward for the person who told the best story was that all of the pilgrims would chip in and buy dinner at the Tabard Inn. The punishment for the person who didn't participate or follow the rules was that he would have to pay the expenses of the entire journey.
