During the Middle Ages, the church had total control over all people. Everyone believed that they would go to hell if they did not appease the Roman Catholic Church. The church demanded 10 percent tithes which made the peasants' lives more difficult than they already were.

In the Middle Ages, people saw things in a much clearer view: they realized that God has only put us here on earth for a short while, and for one purpose, and one purpose only- to decide where we are going to spend eternity. So, they lived their entire lives around the Church. The Church brought them into the world, gave them the sacraments as they grew up, married them, baptized their children, and gave them Extreme Unction when they were dying. Their entire lives revolved around God, and thus around His Church. It wasn't until the protestant heresy came on the scene that this radically changed.
