Risk of physical harm is highest for psychologists assisting the court in custody battles. If working as an evaluator for a custody situation, it is advisable to be cautious. Forensic psychologists are also at risk due to the fact that their patients have committed crimes, sometimes very violent ones. Thus, there is always a risk working with these patients. However, it is a myth that psychiatric patients, as a group, are dangerous. For instance, less than 1% of schizophrenic patients are violent, yet the media always seems to focus on those that are. Thus, the overall risk of physical harm is much lower than it might seem. In my opinion, the biggest danger of being a psychologist is the emotional toll it takes. When dealing with the all-too-real stressors of human suffering, grief, loss, etc... it is easy to feel overwhelmed without even realizing it. Burn out is a typical phenomenon among full-time psychologists and it is very important to maintain yourself (take vacations, etc) to let go of the heaviness for a while. Patients trust psychologist to normalize their worlds for them and the weight of all their worries becomes smothering if you let it.

Detriment #1: Everyone asks you weird questions once they find out what you do - either that or they suddenly stop talking as if anything they say is being analyzed. *Hint - never, ever tell someone you are sitting next to on a plane... Detriment #2: Scientologists hate you. Detriment #3: Movies about things like "multiple personality" are no longer believable. Detriment #4: People think you make the same amount of $ as an M.D. You don't. Detriment #5: People expect you to be empathic all the time. Even your family. Detriment #6: Extremely bizarre behavior no longer shocks you - in fact, it starts to look kind of normal after a while... Detriment #7: At some point, one of your patients will die. Either by suicide or something else. But it will happen. And it will suck. Detriment #8: You are less likely to know when you, yourself, need professional help. Detriment #9: You will not believe in God (over 90% of psychologists report that they do not). Detriment #10: You will love every minute of it. Psychology is a great profession. I can't imagine doing anything else. I love my job, I respect my patients, and I value my colleagues. If you are lucky and determined enough to make it through school, it will be worth every penny.

What is the similarity between a psychologist and a counselor?

Counseling can be a stepping stone to being a psychologist. The difference is the degree. A counselor only needs a masters, while a psychologist needs a doctorate since psychologist are doctors who specify in the study of psychology in whatever area of psychology that they chose to study or practice in. I guess the true similarity in a psychologist and a counselor is that they both study and practice in psychology. A counselor can work for a psychologist. That's about it.

How can you stop your son from being manipulation toward you to get what he want and to other people that is trying to help him?

Intervention is needed from a child psychologist because all of you have enabled your son's behavior from the beginning and the monster is there to stay! When he is faced with someone he doesn't know (psychologist) he will act differently and in time the psychologist can change your child's actions, but, pay attention to the psychologist because ALL of you have to work together and do as the psychologist says or you are wasting your money!
