He grew up on a farm in the backwoods of Kentucky and did not attend school. To some extent his father did bully him. Lincoln was a tall strong young man and it was legal for his father to have him work for other farms near them and to keep his earnings. If it had not been for his stepmother he never would have learned to read. Everything I have read seems to point to the fact he was a rather shy person.
