Lincoln attended only a few seasons of "blab school", or an "old field school". Families in an area would band together, and one of them would donate an old, played out farm field. They'd get together and raise a cabin on it for a schoolhouse. They'd go in together to hire a teacher. Sometimes the teacher was just a little ahead of the students. The teacher made very little, just what the families could spare, plus some chickens and produce, maybe room and board with one of the families. Of course there was no library and very few books. They would learn "by rote", or memorization, and repeat back the information ("blab") verbatim. They had slates to write on if they were lucky, and split log benches to sit on. A water bucket and a dipper for a water fountain. These schools met for only four months or so, between the autumn harvest and the spring plowing. Yet the thirst for knowledge was so great, and the desire of the families for a better life for their children so intense, that some amazingly articulate people were produced by these schools.

Lincoln was largely self taught, an "auto-didact". We have never had his equal for eloquence in the White House.
