God made all land creatures, birds, and man from the ground, and made Eve out of Adam's rib 'because she was taken out of Man'; Man was a living soul in the image of God and was to name them the animals, signifying his rule over them:-

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Gen 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

No suitable helper or companion for Adam was found among the animals:-

Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet ['suitable helper' (MKJV)] for him".

Gen 2:20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet ['suitable helper' (MKJV)] for him.

So, God took one of Adam's ribs and fashioned a 'suitable helper' for him from it:-

Gen 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

Gen 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Gen 2:23 And Adam said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called 'Woman' [Hebrew 'isha'], because she was taken out of Man [Hebrew 'ish'].

Gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

In his 'Study Bible' John MacArthur says the 'man' ['ish'] names her 'woman' ['isha'] because she had her source in him; the word root of 'woman' is 'soft', and the English words man/woman have the same relationship as the Hebrew words hinting at that original creation.

Just as God signified His rule over Adam by naming him, and Adam signified His rule over the woman by naming her 'Eve' ['mother of all living'], and even though the woman was both made for the man and out of the man, all things ultimately came from God:-

1Co 11:8-9, 12 KJV For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. (v.9) Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. (v.12) For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

The ancients saw limits to God's powers. This is the second biblical creation story, beginning at Genesis 2:4b (the second sentence of verse 2:4). In it, the earth already existed but plants did not grow because God had yet to make it rain. In other words, God did not create the planet Earth, just the living things on it. Another example of God's limited powers is that he needed moist earth to create Adam. And so, he need something from which to make Eve. Perhaps romantically, to the ancients, he made Eve out of Adam's rib instead of another piece of clay.

AnswerToday, it seems improbable that God would have taken a rib from Adam, instead of simply creating Eve from nothing. In modern religious belief, God is perceived as omniscient and omnipotent, but in the earliest Hebrew traditions, God was anthropomorphic and had limits to his powers. In the Yahwist creation story (Genesis 2:4b-2:25), he could not make Adam from nothing - he needed some moist clay. So, similarly to make Eve, he needed Adam's rib. Perhaps also, the story was seen as more romantic if Eve was created from Adam rather than from another piece of clay.

You need to realize that Adam and Eve is a fairy story-there was never an Adam and Eve. Its just a nice creation story and nothing else.

I doubt if Adam ever realized that Eve was ever made from his rib. This is but figurative, meaning that Eve was to stand at Adams side in all things. Eve was created in the same way as Adam was, from the elements that were already in existence.

no one knows for sure. The Bible says that God put Adam into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping God took one of his ribs and made Eve. ( from the New American Bible)
