Unfortunately, due to prejudice and due to the fact that America was still segregated, even the most educated black soldiers were given the most menial jobs; they were also expected to endure frequent discrimination from white officers, especially southern white officers who believed black soldiers lacked intelligence. But despite that, there were large numbers of black soldiers (the term "African-American" was not yet in common use; they were either called negro, or colored, or black) during World War 1, and by all accounts, they did a commendable job.
