When James Cook set off in 1768 on his famous journey in which he ultimately charted the coasts of New Zealand and eastern Australia, he was accompanied by a goat. This little-known breed of goat, the Arapawa, provided milk for the sailors during the entire time, and survived the voyage of the Endeavour, to return to England in 1771.

It was English captain Matthew Flinders who had a cat, "Trim", that went with him on his sea voyages.
