During the first world war, the Lieutenant De Gaulle is wounded at the knee in his first combat in Dinant (Belgium) in August 1914. He fights on the Champagne front, and is wounded at the left hand in March 1915 during the Somme battle.

In March 1916, his regiment is under attack and nearly destroyed while protecting the village of Douaumont, near Verdun. He is wounded again at the thigh. He is captured and imprisoned. After a failed escape, he is transfered in a fort from where he attempted again five times to escape.

In May 1940, the general De Gaulle fought sucessfully the battle of Montcornet in northern France, with a uncomplete tank division. The ground his unit gained had to be abandoned for lack of support. He then moved to the Somme river towards Abbeville and his offensive prevented the German advance for four days.

He was then summoned to Paris to become under-secretary of the war ministry.

Why did the battle of edge-hill happen?

in the early months of 1604 any ideas that the parliament and charles I could compromise went down the drain. charles had previously shut parliament all together because he thought he could rule alone. the two sides formed armies and they stumbled upon each other near edge hill. the royalists forced battle on the parliamentarians and so the battle commenced.

Why did the battle of naseby take place?

Although the confrontation between Charles I and Parliament was to continue for a further year after the Battle of Naseby, this battle effectively ended any chance Charles had of victory. His main army was crushed and his weapons and stores were seized. Most unfortunate for The Royalists (also known as Cavaliers), Charles' private papers fell into the hands of his enemies. These proved that the King was interested in hiring foreign mercenaries and bringing in money from abroad. Seizing their opportunity, Parliament published the papers. The Royalist cause already on an unsteady footing, Charles' papers proved to be a political disaster for The Royalists.

Role of Charles de Gaulle after World War 2?

CHARLES DE GAULLE WAS THE LEADER OF THE ANTI-NAZI UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT AGAINST HITLER WHEN HITLER CONQUERED FRANCE.AFTER THE D-DAY LANDING IN NORMANDY,FRANCE AND HITLER WAS FORCED OUT OF FRANCE HE WAS MADE THE PRESIDENT OF FRANCE TO LEAD THE FRENCH FORCES FROM FRANCE AGAINST THE FUEHRER(HITLER) AS AN ALLIED ATTACK AND WHEN THE ALLIES WON THE WORLD WAR 2 HE WAS CLEARLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF FRANCE... The above message contains debatable information/opinion. De Gaulle participated very little in the pre-invasion planning leading up to June 6, 1944. When shown the final plans by Eisenhower, De Gaulle is reported to have criticized it extensively, but had never shown any interest in the planning of the invasion. De Gaulle was an almost necessary figurehead for the French who yearned for freedom from the Nazi rule. To call De Gaulle the "leader of the anti-Nazi underground" is a great stretch of the truth. He functioned more as a politician who was only too happy to march at the front of the column of troops as they made their way into Paris on 19 August 1944. He was otherwise pretty useless (my opinion) to the Allied efforts to liberate Europe.
