He was appointed to command the Second Army Corps of the Army of Mississippi then under the command of General Albert Sidney Johnston. Bragg fought his first major battle at Shiloh in April of 1862. When General Johnston fell wounded in the first day of the battle, Bragg controlled the battle until General PT Beauregard took charge. Bragg's bravery at Shiloh earned him the promotion to a gull general on April 6, 1862.
