While she was married to John Hancock, she lived in Boston, where she became known as a hostess, whose parties were attended by some of the most important people in Revolutionary-era Boston. After her husband died in 1793, she eventually remarried, to a sea captain named James Scott. She lived with him in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (on the seacoast) after their marriage, but when he died in 1809, she returned to Boston.
