Dwight D. Eisenhower was born until October 14, 1890. The Battle of Gettysburg occurred July 1 through July 3, 1863 -- 27 years before "Ike" was ever born! Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States. He was the last U.S. President to have been born in the 19th century. He served as President from 1953 until 1961. He was the commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II and led the invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe that began on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
Ike first visited Gettysburg in 1915 to study the battle with his West Point classmates. After retiring from the military after a 30 year career, Ike and his wife, Mamie, bought their first home. It was a Gettysburg farm. Confederate troops had camped there before moving up to the front lines and during renovations at the house, a Confederate body was found buried in their backyard.

Many people think General Eisenhower loved war. But it was more that he loved his country AND enjoyed military planning. Of Gettysburg, Ike wrote:

We read Lincoln's sentiments, we ponder his words - the beauty of the sentiments he expressed enthralls us; the majesty of the words holds us spellbound - but we have not paid to his message its just tribute until we - ourselves - live it. For well he knew that to live for country is a duty, as demanding as is the readiness to die for it. - Dwight D. Eisenhower, Nov. 19, 1963
