Eutaw Springs is usually accounted as a British tactical victory, with the larger result giving a strategic advantage to the Americans. The British were more successful on the battlefield in the actual fighting, and inflicted about twice the loss on the Americans as what they suffered themselves. Neither side was driven from the battlefield. But, the British did withdraw back to the vicinity of Charleston after the battle, and were unable to halt the Americans operational plans.

Nathaniel Greene was the overall American commander at the battle. Francis Marion commanded the right wing of Greene's army on the field.

Where did the McGifford or McGiffert family originate within County Down Ireland?

McGiffert/McGifford is a family lineage apparently beginning in Scotland to Strangford Lough in Ireland and then to America. It appears all caucasian McGifferts in America are related to this one family though there was probably more than one emigration from the old country. The earliest McGiffert buried in America is in Greene Co. New York Leeds Cemetery is John McGiffert 1793 -1873. The earliest McGiffert buried in Ireland is in a church graveyard in County Down (Killyleagh - Strangford Lough) and is listed in ancestor John McGiffert's records as coming over from Scotland (Gifford?) 1603 - 1607 to Portaferry Down as part of the Plantation of Ulster. It is significant that this church was a non-subscribing Presbyterian church, possibly accounting for the variation in spelling of the surname. The northern American McGifferts distinguished themselves with religious scholarship and critical appraisal of Christian orthodoxy. The southern McGifferts prospered in Alabama cotton. Abolitionism no doubt split the family as it did the Presbyterian Church, with one McGiffert dying for the Union and one for the secessionist slave owners. African American McGifferts can trace their roots to Greene County, Alabama (Eutaw).

Why was the battle of Eutaw Springs important?

Eutaw Springs was about a month before Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. These two were the last major battles in the south. Eutaw Springs solidified Patriot control over almost all of South Carolina, leaving the British in possessin only of Charleston. That city, along with Wilmington, North Carolina and Savannah, Georgia, were the only places the British held in the south, even before the loss of an army at Yorktown. The British strategy of winning the war by conquering and pacifying the south had failed.
