Smart question, the kind I like to hear. According to the "plain view" account of Genesis, the sun was created on the fourth day, (Gen 1:16) so many question how could vegetation be made on the third day (Gen 1:11) and populate the earth when as yet there was no sunlight? The answer is simple. Genesis is warning us not to take the context at face value because it was written in metaphoric and esoteric language.
The Book of Keys and the Safar Ha-Zohar (Both are secret doctrines of The Bible) states that the fruit tree and the herb that God created on the third day are angels that cast forth their seed into the world from which come all living. Grass signifies mortal flesh, while the offspring of the fruit tree signifies the angel that brings forth immortal offspring.

Note that the Torah, in describing the Creation, deliberately employs brevity and ellipsis, just as it does in many other topics. See the Talmud, Hagigah 11b.
- On day 1: God created the universe in general, light, and this Earth. The light was not the same as that of the sun. Rather, it was light that God created before the sun, and which emanated from a point in space without any physical source; like what we might term a "white hole."
- On day 2: God created the separation between the Earth and the upper atmosphere.
- On day 3: God separated the continents from the oceans, and created plants.
- On day 4: God created the sun, moon, and stars.
- On day 5: God created birds and fish.
- On day 6: God created animals and people.
- On day 7: God ceased creating, thereby creating the concept of rest.

∙ 7y agoThe most common understanding of the Biblical account is that real vegetation did come into existence on the third day of creation, using the light created on the first day. (The fact that light comes from the Sun today would not prevent non-sun-light from having the same effect.)
Of course, in a scientific world view, it would have been far longer than 72 hours after the Big Bang for anything as complex as vegetation to have arisen.
