Because Harold had to go to York to fight the Vikings, he had left the Isle of Wight where he had set up his men ready for the Normans. He therefore didn't hear of the Norman's invasion until the battle with the Vikings was over and they had won. As soon as he heard, he of course went straight down to Hastings and found William and his men there. Harold's men, though, had just marched all the way from York to there without a rest and were tired. This meant that Harold had to make a plan on how to keep the Normans away for as long as he could. The Saxons formed the wall of shields and blocked the Normans out for a while. I think you know what happened next. To answer your question, he wasn't prepared at all, but he time to think of a plan on the way down from York.

What was the battle at Stanford Bridge?

The battle of Stamford Bridge was between Harald Hardraada, a tough viking, and the new King Harold Godwinson. Before Harald Hardraada fought Harold Godwinson, he fought two English Earls: Edwin and Morcar, I believe, in York. To the point, in the battle of Stamford Bridge the English fought in tight ranks while the vikings where split up. Harold Godwinnson used a formation called the ramming formation to break to the vikings. after that an archer shot Hardradas throat and most of the vikings fled. the rest swapped sides. After the battle of Stamford Bridge, only about 200 soldiers/ships went back, despite the thousands he brought over. Harald Hardraada lost whilst Harold Godwinson claimed victory but later had to go and fight William of Normandy and his Norman army in the battle of Hastings Both the Battle of Stamford Bridge and The Battle of Hastings were fought in England. The Battle of Hastings is said to be the most famous English battle ever.

Who did Harold fight at the battle of stamford bridge?

He fought William the Conqueror in the battle of Hastings but in York he fought Harold Hardrada. Your question is not kinda right so I'll explain more detailed: In York Harold fought Harold Hardrada another man who wanted to be King so then Harold Godwinson won the battle Straight after that he marched all the way to Hastings to fight against William the Conqueror So in other words Battle of Hastings was in Hastings and the York battle was against Harold Hardrada. Hope that helps xx

Who was Harold hadrada?

The spelling is HarAld Hardrada, the spelling may help you distinguish him from HarOld 2nd of England who's forces defeated and killed HarAld and was subsequently defeated and killed by the forces of Williiam the Conquerer.Harald Sigurdsson ( in Norse Haraldr Sigurðarson) was born sometime in 1015 and died 25 September 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in England. He became king of Norway in 1046 as Harald 3rd and became known Harald Hardrada ( stern or hard ruler), probably because of the many battles he fought against those against his assuming the throne. From 1048 to 1064 he was in almost constant battle against Denmark in an unsuccessful attempt to take the throne of Denmark. From around 1058 Harald also made claim to the throne of England. In 1066 he envaded England to defeat HarOld2nd and seize the throne. He had some intiall success but on 25 September he was defeated and killed in battle by Harold 2.Hardrada's role in English history is important because Harold 2's army tired themselves out making a 4 day forced march to Northern England to defeat him. While they were tiring themselves even more in battle, William landed in Southern England. Harold had to march his army back south immediatly to meet William at Hastings. William had spent the time waiting for Harold by choosing his ground and deploying his forces. By the time Harolds exhausted army arrived there was little time to propare for battle. It was a close battle til almost the end when Harold was killed, if Harold's army had not had to march all the way to Stamford, fight a battle, march all the way back and fight another battle in such a short period, William might have lost and not become king. But even if Haro;d had won, he might have had to turn around and go back north to fight other invaders from Norway or Denmark.

Why did they go to batlle against each other in the battle of hastings?

It was all because of the succession issue of 1066: Harold Godwinsson succeeded Edward on account Edward offered the throne to Harold on his death bed. William duke of Normandy thought he was the rightful claimant to the throne, as, through probably bias Norman sources, Harold promised the throne to William. This is why when news of Harold's coronation by Archbishop Stigand arose, William planned to invade.
