Nuns lived a quiet, reflective life, without much in the way of society, aside from each other. They did some important things, however, especially writing poetry, books of various kinds, and music. Hildegard of Bingen comes to mind as an important intellectual of the 12th century who was a nun. Aside from carrying on correspondence in letters with emperors and kings, and writing books on medicinal botany, she wrote one of our earliest plays set to music. There were a large number of medieval poets, including Hildegard of Bingen, Geoffrey Chaucer, Walter von der Vogelweide, Chrétien de Troyes, Marie de France, Christine de Pizan, Dante Alighieri, and Petrarch. There were so many, I am not sure how a complete list could be made. You should understand that the Late Middle Ages included much of the beginning of the Renaissance, and so some poets are listed in both times. Dante is one example.
