Hitler feared an uprising from the SA, which Ernst Roehm was a leader of. He ordered the shooting of all most members of the SA, all senior members definitely.

Hitler and Roehm were very close friends and Roehm was never planning on an uprising as he was Hitler's most loyal general. Hitler felt guilty on ordering the execution of one of his closest friends and gave Roehm the option to commit suicide, by placing a gun on the table and giving Roehm ten minutes alone. Roehm decided not to commit suicide and was shot.

Hitler himself isn't so much important today, but what is important is to remember what Hitler did in overseeing and orchestrating the genocide of Jews and being responsible for the death of millions of people in order to prevent something like that happening again.
