King Solomon violated the covenant by worshipping foreign Gods in which his 700 wives and 300 concubines introduced him to, (these were foreign Pagen gods, in which are still worshipped to this day by alot of the non Christian organizations.) and not the God of Israel. see 1 kings Ch 13 verse 3, King James Version Bible.

The defining legend of Solomon was his great wisdom, gifted to him by God. If there ever was a King Solomon, The Bible says that he was the wisest of kings. Solomon was certainly not wise when he first succeeded David.

At 1 Kings 1:52, he said that he would not harm Adonijah as long as he showed himself a worthy man. However, in chapter 2, he ordered the death of Adonijah merely because he sought Solomon's approval to marry a woman. He punished the priest Abiathar, who had previously helped Adonijah, and Joab who did not, although he later befriended him. Then he ordered Shimei, who had not been allied with Adonijah, never to leave Jerusalem. Afterwards, Shimei briefly left Jerusalem to recapture and bring back his slaves, so Solomon had him killed. Here, Solomon has demonstrated his lack of good judgement, as a foil for the qualities he would soon display.

Shortly after this, Solomon, in a dream, asked God for wisdom. Soon after God granted Solomon wisdom, two women asked for judgement over the ownership of a small baby. In this episode, Solomon gave his most famous judgement, the only biblical example of his great wisdom. Solomon, with his profound wisdom, just knew that only one woman would be willing to give up her claim to the child rather than have it killed. Whether this insight was really wise can be a matter for judgement.

If the Bible can offer no real example of the wisdom of Solomon, it continues to offer examples of his lack of wisdom. Solomon failed to provide a fatherly example of wisdom to Rehoboam, and his unwise policy of swingeing taxes led to the breakup of the United Monarchy after his death.

King Solomon realized that, in his time, the Israelites were at the height of their power and glory. He came up with a grand plan to bring the worship of the One God to the entire mideast region. To further this plan, he entered into treaties and bonds of marriage with hundreds of neighboring countries, states and city-states. Unfortunately for him, the Torah forbade the Jewish king from taking too many wives (Deuteronomy ch.17), no matter what the reason. when some of these wives later resumed dabbling in their native idolatry, Solomon himself was blamed for it in God's eyes.

Among other things, Solomon let his heart be strayed to other gods because of his many wives which we're mostly not of the Jewish faith.

In short: Solomon's heart did not remain true to God, as he honored the gods of his many foreign wives in his later years. See 1 Kings chapter 11.
