1850's during the gold rush. He saw that his jeans were falling apart because of the water and dirt while he mined for gold. So, he added brads to support the seams. The other miners loved the idea and before he knew it he was selling his jeans.
Levi Strauss was a tailor and made the first jeans in the CA gold rush. I don't think he analyzed myths. He just wanted a good pair of jeans that could hold up in the dirty wet conditions of the gold fields.

Blue jeans were invented by Jacob Davis in partnership with Levi Strauss & Co in 1871 and patented on May 20, 1873. They became very popular during the California Gold Rush. Jacob Davis was a tailor who found that rivets at the stress points increased the durability and he contacted Levi Strauss and the rest is history.
