Well, he didn't travel "for" Italy, as though they had a team or something. He was Italian, and he travelled (a lot!) but that's about the extent of things. Upon his return from the court of Kublai Khan, he was thrown in jail for being a deadbeat and a teller of tall tales. It was there that he wrote his book(s).
