She became Queen of France after her marriage to Francis II. Catholics believed her to be the Queen of England(not recognizing Queen Elizabeth I)because they did not recognize the devorce of Katherine of Aragon and Henry VIII and therefore his marriage to Anne Boleyn(mother of Queen Elizabeth I)was seen as null and void. Mary was even said to have called herself at the time Queen Mary II of England or Queen Mary of Scotland, France, and England.
