A concentration camp for Japanese immigrants was established in 1942 at the Hacienda de Temixco, six miles south from Cuernavaca, Morelos State capital city, shortly after Mexico entered WWII.
A rice mill manned by the forced work of the inmates was also established at the facility. The Ex-Hacienda de Temixco concentration camp was closed in late 1945, shortly after the end of the war, and it was turned into a still existing water park in the late 1960s. In spite of the restrictions to their freedom and the forced work the Japanese people interned at the Temixco camp were treated humanely for the most, and many of them stayed in Mexico after the war.
Besides the Temixco concentration camp, there are a few prior records in Mexican history of facilities that would meet the definition by today's views, but that were not called concentration camps at the time. The Porfirio Díaz administration waged a genocide war against the Yaqui people in Sonora and the prisoners of that war were relocated to the Yucatan peninsula where they were forced to work in practical slavery conditions at the sisal plantations. Often other people considered undesirable by the Díaz regime were sent to Valle Nacional in Oaxaca, where thousands died of starvation and abuses.
People were sent to concentration camps without trial and without any sentence. They were held indefinitely.
There were concentration camps in the Holocaust. The concentration camps were basically work/death camps.
The German concentration camps were used to EXECUTE the Jews and the other "inferior races" so I would think that the camps did not have any health rules.
There is no historical evidence or information available to suggest that Hannelore Schmatz had any role or job in a concentration camp. Hannelore Schmatz was a German mountaineer and not associated with the atrocities of the concentration camps.
