He could not accept a divine Jesus and the Christian idea of three persons united in one God, so being a prophet, indeed the final prophet, made a difference for him and his followers. So perhaps so but there are many who argue other ways or ideas.

Muslims believe that Islam is a faith that has always existed and that it was gradually revealed to humanity by a number of prophets, but the final and complete revelation was made through the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century CE (common era).

NO. Whichever perspective you take on the formation of Islam, all roads lead to Islam developing separately from Christianity.

1) Islamic Perspective: According to Islamic sources, Islam was the religion of all of the divine prophets. They were only later coopted by Judaism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Arab Henotheistic Faiths. As a result, if one religion is a corruption of the other, then Christianity is a rejection of Islam, not the other way around.

2) Secular View Where Muhammad Exists: If Muhammad is a historical person who founded Islam as a unique religion, which is the prevailing Non-Muslim perspective, he did not form this religion as a rejection of Christianity, but rather as a synthesis of Jewish, Christian, and Arab Henotheist beliefs. It was not a rejection of Christianity, but simply an incomplete adoption of it.

3) Secular View Without Muhammad: There are a minority of secular historians who believe that Muhammad did not actually exist and was actually an invention during the Umayyad and Abbassid Periods to justify their new religion. Under this perspective, Islam was simply a religious development in Arabia and Muhammad had nothing to do with its development at all.

Who started Christianity and Islam?

Islam started by start of universe creation. Islam means submission and surrender to Allah (god in English and same God for Christians and Jews). Accordingly, all God creatures are created on full submission (or Islam) to God as the one and only one God. God prophets were sent by God to convey Islam message to mankind. So, all God prophets; since Adam through Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad; are calling to Islam in the sense of God worship as the one and only one God with no partner, no father, no son, no companion, no associate, and no equivalence. Islam per God revelation of Torah to Moses is called Judaism. Islam per God revelation of the Bible to Jesus is called Christianity. Islam per God revelation of Quran to Muhammad is called the same name Islam. Prophet Muhammad called to Islam per Quran revelation to him in year 610 AD.
