The age-old conflict between the Arab's and the Jews is not necessarily because of their religious differences (Palestinians include Muslims, Christians and Druze). The basis of the conflict is essentially due to a struggle over land. The Jewish claims to the land is based from the Bible as it's promise to Abraham and his descendants, but Palestinians reject this biblical claim. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Palestine was becoming competition and of interest by political authorities. The British High Commissioner in Egypt, McMahon, promised that if the Arabs gave support to Britain during World War I, the British government would support the Arabs as being independent under Hashemite rule in Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire, which would also include Palestine. Despite this promise, Britain made other conflicting promises and the British Foreign Minister gave support to "a Jewish national home place in Palestine." In 1921 Britain divided the disputed land into two regions. The Palestinians Arabs did not like the British Mandate because it frustrated their ambition to become self-governed and they opposed the massive amounts of Jews that would migrate because it endangered their situation in the country. In 1939, the White Paper noted the end of the British-Zionist agreement. On November 29, 1947, the UN divided Palestine, although some Jewish settlements fell into the Palestinian state and several Palestinians joined the Jewish territory. The territory designated to the Jews was little larger than the Palestinian state. The Palestinian Arabs rejected the UN plan and wanted to vote as an international betrayal; they did not like that the Jews got more land. This created tension between the Arab and Jewish citizens and fighting began just days after the partition. Britain evacuated Palestine on May 15, 1948 and the Zionist leaders proclaimed the state of Israel. The Israeli government discriminated against the Arabs and they received far fewer sources of education, healthcare, public works, municipal government and economic development. This created a struggle for the Palestinian Arabs to keep their cultural and political identity. The PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) was created in 1964 to control Palestinian nationalism. It wasn't until 1993 that Israel acknowledged Palestinians nation rights or identified the Palestinians as an independent party to the conflict. Israel declined to negotiate with the PLO and claimed it to be a terrorist organization.
