Richard Nixon nominated Gerald Ford to replace resigned Vice President Spiro T Agnew. However he still needed to be approved by the Senate and House of Representatives. On November 27th, 1973 Ford was confirmed by the House as the new Vice President by a vote of 387 to 35.

Historically, Nixon was given little choice but to choose Ford as his Vice President.

It turns out that he did, but he was not aware of this at the time of the 'selection'. Nixon's vice president, Agnew, resigned. Nixon then nominated Ford to take Agnew's place, and Ford's nomination was accepted by the Senate. Then when Nixon resigned, Ford became president without any elections or ratifications necessary. He was legally vice president when Nixon resignedand therefore the office of president became his.
