Why did Simpson use a donkey?

It is uncertain how many donkeys Simpson used. Most information suggests he had just one or possibly two, calling it/them by the name of 'Murphy', 'Duffy', and 'Abdul' at various times. It has been suggested that his first donkey was known by the above names, but there is strong evidence that he found and tended a second donkey, naming it 'Queen Elizabeth'.John Simpson Kirkpatrick and his donkey Duffy (the most popular name) are legends. They are honoured and remembered as part of the ANZAC tradition.

Did John Simpson Kirkpatrick win a medal in WW1?

Many have lobbied for John Simpson Kirkpatrick, the men who used a donkey to lead wounded men to safety at Gallipoli, to be awarded a medal. However, he has never received either of the medals for which he should have been eligible, that is, the Distinguished Conduct Medal or a VC. He was never formally recommended by the officer in question. He is at least commemorated in a large bronze sculpture at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, as well as in many other statues and exhibits around Australia. Simpson is also commemorated in his home town of South Shields, England, where there are museum exhibits about him. A new petition has been launched to have him awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross before the 100th anniversary of his death in 2015. See the related link below.
