He didn't invent it. It was already something in France but Winston popularized it as what itmeantin France; Victory. Later in the 60's and 70's, hippies changed it from Victory to Peace.
He did use a hand sign that during the 'hippie/peace' came to have the meaning of 'peace'. When he famously used it, it meant 'V' for 'victory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign
Winston Churchill
nope it is not it was in fact made up by Winston Churchill in the World War 2. I have answered many questions and i will be remembered!
The "peace sign" was used by Winston Churchill during World War II to represent "Victory" because the upraised fingers looked like the letter V. He certainly did not use it to advertise to the world that he was a Freemason. That was no secret.
Winston Churchill
If you are referring to the letter V, then no it was not considered evil, Sir Winston Churchill used the two finger sign during WW11, and it gave encouragement to the British people.
It can mean several things. One meaning is the "V" vor victory sign made famous by Winston Churchill during WWII. In more contemperary usage it can also be recognized as a sign meaning "peace."
It means peace. It was used during World War 2 to symbolize V for victory. (There's a fairly common picture of Winston Churchill doing this.)
The V sign symbolizes peace, victory, or can be a gesture of solidarity and support. It is widely recognized as a positive symbol in many cultures around the world.
Two reasons. With the palm of the hand facing outwards, the V sign means 'Victory' (as popularised by Winston Churchill) or 'Peace' (as popularised by hippies of the 1960s). However, in the UK and several other countries, if the palm is facing inwards, it's an offensive gesture which means the same thing as the Middle Finger.
Sir Winston Churchill, of course ( the V-sign Man). It"s Prime Minister, not how you spelled it., By the way Churchill was one of , maybe the only statesmen or political leaders to have won the Nobel Prize- For Literature- around the early fifties. President Obama and also Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were , to date, Nobel PEACE laureates. The Peace Prize is only one of seversl Nobel awards, by the way. I still hear people claiming that writer John Steinbeck won the Nobel Peace Prize- he was awarded the Nobel prize- for Literature.
churchill's trademark salute was the V sign
