No, Yahoo originated in California. The founders were Jerry Yang and David Filo. (Yang is a Taiwanese-born American though) While electrical engineering students at Stanford, Yang and Filo and created a directory of other sites as a personal project. This later came to be known as Yahoo when word spread through the school about the database and interest peaked.
