The Roman army was so great mainly because it was the world's first professional army. They went through a rigorous training program and had the high tech weapons of their time. This not only included their personal sword, the gladius, but their siege weapons too.
They were also mentally trained to believe that they could not lose, that they were the best.

∙ 11y agoOf course! The Roman Army was one of the main reasons (if not the main) that it could easily and effectively conquer other nations and civilizations.
The Romans developed a professional army. The career of the soldiers was 20 years. Therefore, the soldiers were very well trained and drilled and were very disciplined. Their professionalism was often what gave them the edge against enemies who has untrained bands of warriors.
The army was well organised. A legions had 10 cohorts. Cohorts 2 to 10 were made up of six centuries. The 1st cohort had 5 double centuries of elite veterans. There was also the conternubium, which was a squad of eight men who shared a tent. A legion had 5,100 soldiers and an army had several legions. The soldiers carried their supplies on their backs.
The Romans also developed new weaponry, such as the ballista, a projectile thrower, and a catapult capable of shooting an arrow with a range on 1,200 feet. They also built very elaborate forts with a hospital and a fire brigade.
