The origin of anime is Japan. I'm not exactly sure where, but it originated from there. Another way of referring to anime is Japanimation, since it's just like Western animation (or American Cartoons), except from Japan. :3
There is action, Horror, comedy, romance, and fantasy. I hope that solves your questions! It is true as their cartoons are anime inspired or the other way around, though we like to be amused by cartoons rather than to be intrigued and caught up in them, like they get with their character developments and plot twists of anime. We have graphic novels, and they have manga. It is just like that.

You might also be familiar with Manga, they mostly like to take those stories and characters from the books and make them moving, to make anime.
