US President James Buchanan was an important figure in US history. He served his country well until the "Southern problems" erupted. Before that time Buchanan served the US by:
1. In 1820 he served five terms in the US Congress;
2. In 1831 he was appointed minister to Russia;
3. In 1834 he was elected as Senator of Pennsylvania until 1845 and chaired the Foreign Relations Committee;
4. In 1845 he was appointed by President Polk to be Secretary of State; and
5. He was elected as the 15th US president and served as a Democrat from 1857 to 1861.
The problem of Southern succession was a delicate matter and Buchanan can to have done little to solve the problem. Basically his last chance at being truly significant was to prevent the Southern succession.
He left the new president, Abraham Lincoln, a huge problem.
