Art Blakey, drummer and leader of The Jazz Messengers, virtually created Hard Bop. The original concept was to have a small Jazz group with Big Band arrangements to balance Art's thunderous drumming. The Original Jazz Messengers were, Donald Byrd Trumpet, Hank Mobley Tenor Sax, Horace Silver Piano, Doug Watkins Bass and Art drums.
Like most Super groups, this one didn't last long. Art kept the name and the concept and eventually attracted young, strong talent that established The Jazz Messengers as the band where fresh players proved themselves. Over the years the roster has become a veritable Who's Who of Jazz. The Original album and many others are available on iTunes. Enjoy.
