Barbarian wars and invasions of Empire territory of course were costly. It drained Rome's resources in terms of lost lives and the cost of the logistics involved. When Rome was the "invader" of course the offset was the booty and new wealth their expansion created.

The fall of Rome is an expression which refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. The invasions by the Germanic peoples were the cause of the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire.

This part of the Roman Empire fell under the weight of these invasions. These Germanic peoples conquered all its territories except for Italy. They formed their own kingdoms: the Kingdom of the Vandals in northwestern Africa, the Visigoth Kingdom in southwestern France, Spain and Portugal, the Burgundian Kingdom in eastern France, and the Frankish Kingdom in Holland south of the river Rhine, Belgium and northern and central France. The Alemanni took over Lorraine (in northeastern France) and Switzerland. The Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians migrated to Britain in waves. Eventually they formed Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.

The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for another 1,000 years. It continued to be ruled by an emperor. Historians have coined the term Byzantine Empire to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part is Byzantine Empire. The Romans did not use this term, they called it Roman Empire and Romania (this referred to this empire and not the country which was later called Romania).

The term Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the Greek city which was redeveloped, turned into the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and renamed Constantinople by the emperor Constantine the Great in 330. It is used to indicate the fact that not long after the fall of the western part, this empire became centred on Greece and Greek in character after it lost most of its non-Greek territories. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of this empire in 620, some 150 years after the fall of the west.

Barbarian tribes were always raiding the Roman Empire. Barbarians were people who did not live in the Roman Empire or didn't speak Latin.

What role did christianity play in the fall of rome?

I think that Christianity played an important role before and during the fall of the Roman Empire. Historians explain that this made Roman citizens become pacifist which made it easier for the barbarians to invade Rome. This explains why it was so easy for the barbarians to infiltrate into the city of Rome. Another reason why Christianity held a major role for the decline of empire was that money was used to construct churches instead of having been used to uphold the Roman Empire.
