Yes.

The Union army found itself with slaves it had been told to liberate, but didn't know what to do with. At first these (ex-)slaves were just given menial work around the camps. Then the army started to recruit them into existing regiments, which suited a lot of low-ranking white soldiers, who would automatically move up in the system because of this. Eventually there were whole black units, some of them serving in the front line.

The Confederates would not consider the idea of putting slaves into uniform until quite late in the war. When General Pat Cleburne suggested it, his comments were literally scratched from the record. Only right at the end, when the Confederates were barefoot and starving, did they start recruiting slaves into the army, and by then it was too late to make any difference.
