Cotton was known in medieval times. A limited amount was grown in some areas around the Mediterranean, and some was also imported from Muslim lands in North Africa and the Middle East.
Cotton would have been a distant third in popularity behind wool and linen, however. Wool is of course an animal hair fiber from sheep, and linen is a vegetable fiber made from flax plants. Both were produced throughout Europe in large quantities. Wool was used for outer garments due to its warmth and water resistance, and linen was used for garments worn next to the skin, as well as for towels, sheets, tablecloths etc. In fact, such items are referred to as "linens" because originally they were made almost exclusively from linen cloth.
