Physically, yes. House slaves might physically have it softer, but the very close contact with the master and his family could have drawbacks that could be worse than hard physical labor. Because field laborers by simply doing their job, could keep their noses clean and their master and his family would be far-away figures who rarely bothered them. House slaves could be - and often were - subject to constant criticism, the butt of temper tantrums en even sadism and round-the-clock demands.
