Did medieval people play the flute?

Single and double flutes were played throughout the medieval period. Manuscript illustrations of the court of King David often show him as a medieval king playing his harp (with which he was supposed to have composed all 150 psalms in The Bible), surrounded by musicians playing bells, viols, rebecs, organistra, flutes and the plucked psaltery.

Later in the period, the lute and shawm became popular, followed by the crumhorn and the recorder.
