Why did the American Indians became famous?

Like many other conquered nations, they were first made famous by their brave resistance to European colonisers. Native Americans put up a lot of resistance over several hundred years, while being targeted like vermin by the British and Americans who moved in and took over their land. There was a long period when a white man could be rewarded for exterminating natives - all he had to do to earn a reward was bring in proof of the killing. The most common proof used by these exerminators was to bring the scalps of the murdered natives, with their highly identifiable long dark hair. The native Americans were brave, and smart. They soon acquired guns and took on the invaders almost on equal terms, but in the end they were outgunned and defeated.
