The Bible doesn't describe how or what Jesus looked like, it only describes His character.

With regards to Him be percieved to be a European in the Western Hemisphere:

First, Jews do not look like what we would percieve as a person from the Middle East (i.e. Arab). Jews have been scattered all over the world.

Second, this occurs in other religions aswell, take the Buddha if you go to China he's Chinese, if you go to India he's Indian. The world didn't used to be full of milti-cultural societies and this was done so that locals could relate.

Further to the above answer:

The above answer is perfectly correct in that the Bible gives us no physical description of Jesus whatsoever. However, some features can be deduced from the Gospel accounts:

1. As Jesus' trade was a carpenter, and as he was strong enough to overturn the tables in the Temple, he would have been muscular or stocky in build.

2. The culture of the Jewish people then was for men to have long hair (unlike the Romans) and beards (again unlike the cleanshaven Romans).

3. Several accounts refer to Jesus' clothing such as the miracle of the woman with an issue of blood and the story of Jesus' crucifixion where his cloak was betted on by the soldiers who crucified him.

4. As Jesus was Jewish he would have had normal Jewish traits as if he was anything else, it would have certainly been mentioned. Therefore he would have had dark hair, an olive complexion, and a prominent 'Jewish' nose.

Therefore we can picture Jesus as a stocky, muscular man, with dark hair, a full beard, a prominent nose, olive skin, and wearing a long tunic under a one-piece robe.

Anything else would be mere invention.

However, as people relate to Jesus in their own way, and wish to resonate with his appearance, Jesus has been portrayed as white caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes, Asian, black, innuit and all other racial types. However, what is important is not his physical appearance, but his character (as the above answer attests) and what he said, taught and did in His mission on earth.
