no older slaves did the hard labor. elderly slaves babysat the children until they were old enough to start working themselves. sometimes slave owners would have sex with their slaves to make more baby slaves so that when they grow they can do work. also some slave women were promised freedom if they had 15 babies with their slave owner.
about 5000
In the Southern States, slaves did almost all of the work. The Southern states relied heavily on cotton and they had slaves do the work. Slaves would pick cotton which isn't very pleasant, and before the Cotton Gin, slaves had to seperate the cotton fibers from their seeds.
They made literacy tests an easy way to prevent freed slaves from voting APEX
The former slaves either stayed with their masters. But they didn't say they were slaves, they are now employers of their old master. The employers got paid a higher amount.
Some already had instruments that they saved before they were slaves. But they sometimes found materials that work well for instruments like vines, sticks, and maybe an old cloth.
