Protestantism began with the Protestant Reformation, in 1517, according to most accounts, and this was after the Middle Ages ended. There were heterodox groups during the Middle Ages, but they were not, strictly speaking, Protestant.
The groups that operated outside the Church had many different beliefs, some of which we might consider strange today. Most, possibly all, believed people could have a personal relationship with God.
The Protestants left the Roman Catholic Church after the Middle Ages ended, during the Renaissance.
